Amber is the only female officer in the Falcon’s Bend Police Department. She is secretly seeing her partner Warren, and hopes for a real relationship, something she never had before. She is a bit of a tomboy and played high school football.

Warren is a patrol officer on the FBPD. He has been widowed from his high school sweetheart for five years, and the upper floor of his house is exactly as she left it.

A young woman is found murdered and raped in her apartment. An unusual ring is found on her left hand as if the murderer has taken the victim as his bride. This crime is similar to another in the past. Amber’s neighbor is the woman’s grandmother, so she takes a personal interest and is determined to solve the crime. It takes her mind off wondering where her relationship with Warren Leeds is going.

I enjoyed this mystery and the ups and downs of Amber and Warren’s relationship. Amber is very new at having a relationship and lacks confidence in herself, and Warren’s former relationship makes it difficult for him to form a new one. The mystery itself is engrossing, as is the love story. I did wonder why an officer injured in the line of duty is performing patrol functions when he can not use one arm; it kind of put a damper on the story for me. The characters and the mystery itself make up for a lot, though.
