Diana Holland, the sister of Elizabeth, is secretly in love with Mr. Henry Schoonmaker. They have tried to keep their liaison from everyone. When Elizabeth cannot be found, will Diana finally get to be with Henry, especially when Elizabeth is set to marry him or is their love over?

Elizabeth Holland, a young socialite and debutante, is missing. Some believe it to be foul play, while others wonder if it is a kidnapping. She was supposed to marry Henry Schoonmaker to help with her family’s financial ruin. What does her sister, Diana, really know of the circumstances?

Henry, the son of an aspiring New York Mayor, will be valuable to Elizabeth. The only problem is that Elizabeth does not love Henry. Her heart belongs to another, just as her sister, Diana, has her own secret love with Henry. Diana may not have her chance to be with Henry if Penelope Hayes has her way. Penelope wants the money and prestige that comes with Henry, along with climbing the social ladder. When news leaks of Elizabeth’s disappearance, Henry is not certain he can continue his relationship with Diana. Until the situation with Elizabeth is cleared up, Diana and Henry must rethink their relationship, as Penelope sets her sights on causing trouble.

Rumors is the sequel to The Luxe and is a story that plunges the reader into a turn of events that practically blows the mind. Elizabeth, Diana, and Penelope are vigorous characters that set the stage in a fast moving tale painted in sophistication and grand style. With each turn of the page, I sat spellbound wondering about Elizabeth and if the girls would ever get to live their lives the way they choose. Penelope definitely knows how to pull the plug on any situation. Anna Godbersen paints a detailed portrait of an era rich in glittery debutantes and socialites that sometimes fall prey to rumors and whispers. She pens a novel with elegance and grace, and one I look forward to in the next installment.
