Scarlet of Lysia travels the world as a peddler. He is an honest merchant who wants only to ply his trade in peace. When confronted by a group of bandits, he meets a man who is especially intriguing to him. Their worlds are vastly different, yet he cannot get Liall out of his mind.

Liall is a ruthless, yet honorable man who is fascinated by the attractive young peddler who crosses his path. As the leader of his people, it is not always easy for him to follow his heart. Although he does not understand why he is so taken with Scarlet, he just cannot help himself.

This is only the first book in what looks to be a series that will follow the travels of Scarlet the peddler. Scarlet's aging parents rely on his assistance during rough times. He is devastated when he returns home one day to find them murdered and their village burned to the ground. As Scarlet is dealing with many trials and tribulations, he must also deal with his fascination for a man he knows he should not want. Can Liall and Scarlet overcome their problems and differences to form a lasting relationship?

Ms. Crow pens a tale of a harsh time where life is hard and surviving can be a struggle. I will be the first to admit that much about this complex tale escapes me. While I found the story not to my taste, it is very well written. I am sure there are many readers who would love the intricate depths of the plot. If you enjoy stories of same sex relationships that have very complex character interaction, then this is the book for you.
