Thirteen years ago, Alex's sister was raped and murdered, and her mother committed suicide. She tried to end it all unsuccessfully herself. Rescued by her aunt and her family, she is now an ER nurse.

Dan is a FBI investigator. He has just returned from Philadelphia where his brother, a serial killer who recently murdered their parents, was killed while they attempted to capture him. He is haunted by the photographs his brother left behind.

Thirteen years ago, a girl was raped and murdered and left in a ditch by the side of the road. A drugged-out drifter was convicted of the crime. Now another body is found in identical circumstances very close by. Did they convict the right man? Alex's stepsister Bailey is missing and her daughter left alone. Alex is afraid that like her twin sister, Bailey may be a victim of the vicious killer. The authorities in Dutton do not seem too concerned about the ex-junkie, but Investigator Dan Vartanian feels the case bears looking into more closely.

This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with a very good romance as a bonus. The author gets into the mind of the serial killer without giving his identity away, casting suspicion everywhere. The characters and their secret lives are very well described as it the atmosphere of this strange little town. Dan and Alex are very complex characters damaged by the past, but stronger for it all. The subplots of Bailey's ordeal and her growing relationship with Beardsley, and Luke's investigation add more depth to the tale. There is definitely more to this story as one of the major players is still out there and I cannot wait to find out what happens.
