Alexandra Kenner is going through a terrible time. She thought Edward was the perfect lover until he confesses he is married. With that remark, she tells him it is over. Her eighty-one-year-old grandmother offers to find someone to take a hit out on him, but Alex says no.

Mack Douglas is a carpenter and wants to build Alex a house. He has always protected her. She has always been a close friend, but he wishes she could see him more than a friend. When he hears she has been treated wrongfully by Edward, he offers his support.

Mack sees Alex as much more than a beautiful woman, but she only sees him as the dreaded F word, friend. He has already been through a short-lived marriage and does not plan to ever go down that road again. Still, he would love to take his chances with Alex. After Edward tells her to move out of his apartment, Mack offers his home to her but Alex has other plans. Her grandmother has a house that needs renovating, so Alex moves into it to begin work. Mack believes the house should be torched. When Alex learns she is pregnant, Mack feels she will need him more than ever now. It is hard for him to continue hiding his feelings for her, but when Alex sees him differently, can the two get past the not-marrying stage, to see they are the perfect couple to marry? Or will they stay friends for life?

Shirley Jump weaves a story that hypnotizes from the first page. The feisty crisp dialogue she brings into this read is upbeat and keeps the story moving at a great pace. I love the characters of Alex and Mack. It is apparent they both are really meant to be with each other but watching them trying to open up their hearts makes it an even greater page-turner. I love it, absolutely love it. The tension builds up beautifully between the two and the grandmother, along with some of her older friends in their senior citizens' home, add some great creativity to the storyline. Mack has utter charm and can come work on my house anytime. Brilliant writing and sparkling players make Simply The Best number one in my book.
