Lt. Helen Andros has a lot to deal with in her heart. She is accustomed to doing things her way that even though she has found someone she can rely on, it will be hard for her to let go. She must learn to let her guard down or things will not go well and she needs to learn quickly.

Lord James Mordecai feels deceived when he learns he has a child. He has to learn to forgive his lover and move on, but with serious consequences looming in the distance, it will take all his strength to get through them. Is he strong enough to outlast the worst attack possible?

Helen is in a new place and finds it difficult. She is accustomed to coming and going as she pleases but now that she has a parent in her life, she finds it difficult to submit control. Her need to help people is so strong she cannot see her own need to be cared for. Her mother’s friend, Judith is there to help her but even Judith realizes Helen needs to figure things out on her own. It may take drastic consequences before Helen comes to terms with everything. What will that do to her relationship with her new parent?

Ms. Talmadge's characters' emotions are well done and drew me into the midst of the story. The world she creates is fascinating but the rules leave me frustrated. I can empathize with Helen and hope she will come to see things in a better light. There are some loose ends needing more explanation, so I hope there will be more information in subsequent books of this series. I need to understand why the narrator is telling this story and why it has such meaning for her.
