Sissy Mae Smith is a werewolf. She also happens to be a very strong woman who does not take any guff from anyone, her best friends included, and has a mean right hook. She and Mitchell have been best friends for quite some time, each deciding they liked the other too much to just have a one night stand, no matter their mutual attraction.

Mitchell Shaw is a werelion and a cop. Currently he has a death sentence on his head because he saw something when undercover that he was not supposed to see. He is due to testify, but there are those who plan on seeing him dead before he can do so.

When Mitch and Sissy go to her brotherʼs wedding, all sorts of interesting stuff happens, and they each get to see weres they have never met before. However, in spite of all the fun being had, Mitchʼs family notices that he is not exactly himself. When at the end of the wedding, Mitch is shot, Sissy nearly has an apoplexy, but it is not long before she gets furious at the idiot stupid enough to shoot Mitch. Once he is somewhat stable, she decides to take him to the one place no one will look for him, her home town of Smithtown. However, things are tricky because Sissy has her own issues with home, including an old witch who wants her to join her group, and other family members who do not want Mitch there, and cannot understand why Sissy brought him home with her. There are even those who will think to challenge Mitch for being there. However, their being there is not the total solution, and they are not out of danger yet. It will take some serious ingenuity on everyoneʼs part, and some sneakiness on Mitch and Sissyʼs part, to be able to keep Mitch alive so he can testify. In the meantime, Mitch and Sissyʼs relationship begins to change and grow and it is not long before friendship begins turning into something stronger and more lasting than even mutual attraction.

Ms. Laurenston writes humor like nobody’s business! I got a total charge out of Sissy and Mitch and all the antics they and their friends get up to. The canine weres in the book had me laughing so hard a couple of times it was all I could do to catch my breath. Of course the southern/hillbilly references did not hurt either, and as someone with family from that part of the world, I could easily relate to the characters. The author did a fantastic job of showing the buildup of Mitch and Sissy’s relationship and how it morphed into something deeper. The story also had some great moments of suspense, such as when Mitch got shot that really helped to drive the storyline. This is one of those books that makes you chuckle even after you finish reading it. A very endearing read that I am more than happy to recommend. If you like your romance mixed with a little paranormal, humor and a dash of suspense, then you definitely do not want to miss this one!
