Lily is a hardworking doctor, the only one in her chain of islands. She left medical school pregnant with her son Benjy. She was in love with his father Ben, but he had other dreams and she was committed to her beloved home.

Ben is a frontline doctor with the SAS. He thrives on excitement and the nature of his job enables him to keep people at a distance. His latest assignment brings him to the island home of the only woman he ever came close to loving and a surprise.

An insurrection on the tiny island of Kapua brings the assistance of the SAS. Two doctors separated by time and commitments reconnect through their son.

I really liked the character of Lily. She uncomplainingly cares for the people of the islands, but does not come off as a martyr. The insurrection and kidnapping of her son add elements of suspense and danger to her meeting Ben again. I found it hard to like Ben at first. I found him self-involved and a bit spoiled when he expected Lily and Benjy to be his family for a few days a year when he would not even admit to loving them. Fortunately, he improves as the story goes on. The supporting characters like Pieter, Sam, Rosa and Doug all added a lot to the story. I only wish the author could have included a suitable fate for Jacques, he just seemed to disappear from the story. This is a fast reading romance that I found very entertaining.
