Naomi Horton is a pediatric surgeon who longs for a baby of her own. Fertility problems and a broken marriage almost ended those dreams, but artificial insemination resurrected hope.

Rick Webber is Naomi’s boss. His family was killed in a car accident. Grief and guilt have prevented him from getting close to any woman other than his sister and her ten year old daughter.

Life in a pediatric intensive care unit is both exciting and heartbreaking. Naomi has little time for a life of her own. Her new boss stirs feelings that she swore she would never feel again. Rick is equally attracted to Naomi, but is still devastated by the loss of his wife and daughter two years earlier. Circumstances and their jobs bring them together, but as each wants different things of their future, attraction may not be enough.

This novel has two very likable main characters who have suffered traumatic loss. They handle it in different ways. Rick holds his feelings inside and keeps people at a distance. Naomi wants a child and husband to love. Despite a failed marriage, she has not lost hope. The author makes their workplace fascinating with both happy and sad cases. The train wreck and subsequent conference in Chicago was a particularly engrossing part of the story. This rocky love affair between these two busy surgeons was a very fast and entertaining read.
