Historical Romance

After her husband divorced, humiliated her, and condemned her as a whore, Francesca decided to become a grand one. She is now one of the most infamous and sought after courtesans in Europe. She now travels in circles her ex-husband only dreams of.

James Cordier is an operative for the British government and is determined to complete his last mission and retire to a normal life. This mission will avenge both himself and the comrades who did not survive imprisonment by the French.

Francesca Bonnard has overcome the scandal and humiliation of her divorce to become rich and famous as a courtesan. She holds some incriminating letters as insurance against the man she was once married to, but he wants to be Prime Minister and only those letters stand in his way. He is not the only one who needs those letters; James Cordier is the man they send to get them.

Francesca is a unique and interesting character. She has overcome much, taken up a scandalous profession, and yet she still has not been completely corrupted or hardened. This makes her a target for James, who falls quickly under her spell. I loved reading about each of them trying to get the upper hand over the other. The other characters are superb, particularly the venal Marta Farsi, and the surprising Comte Magny. John Bonnard is purely evil, but the other characters are harder to figure out. Like Francesca, the reader will have a difficult time sorting the good guys from the bad guys at first. The author paints a vivid picture of Venice after the Napoleonic Wars; you can picture every putto in Francesca’s palazzo. This story has action, intrigue and a well written romance with a wronged heroine and a mysterious hero, all the elements of a really good story.
