Everybody in Sleepy Hollow thinks Emma Lee Raines is suffering from “funeral trauma”. After all, it could be considered normal for someone who grew up in the funeral business to act a little creepy, but Emma Lee is beginning to think that the ghosts she has been seeing since her near brush with death are not hallucinations at all.

The town gossip and Emma’s granny’s nemesis, Ruthie Sue Payne, winds up in a casket. The woman’s bossy ghost is convinced someone pushed her down the stairs. When Ruthie Sue demands Emma Lee help find the killer, Emma Lee has a feeling her life is about to get a whole lot weirder.

Emma Lee is not convinced there was a murder, but Ruthie Sue says she cannot cross over until the mystery is laid to rest. Hoping to get her ghostly companion out of her life before the whole town thinks Emma Lee has lost her mind, she sets out to find a killer. Hopefully Emma Lee can uncover the answers before someone in Sleepy Hollow decides she is too much trouble to keep around.

I thought at first that this book was the second or third in the series because readers get dropped right into a story with lots of history and complex relationships. However, this is the first book and it begins pretty slowly as the story unwinds itself and the characters and relationships are introduced. Once the plot finally gets going readers will enjoy the small town flavor, but you really have to stick with this one to get the reward.
