Dallas Cole is a dance major and the daughter of the University's football coach. She avoids all things football and longs to be out from under her father’s thumb.

Carson McClain is the second string quarterback for the team. He needs to work hard and get a scholarship to continue his education. He has no time for anything but football and school.

Dallas thought she would be finally out from under the scrutiny of her football coach father when she was accepted to Rush University. True, the dance program was not much, but her father would not let her leave Texas. Then the successful high school coach was hired to be Rusk’s Head Coach. To make matters worse, her ex is the first string quarterback and difficult to avoid. She does meet an interesting guy at a campus party, but it turns out that Carson plays football too. Carson is captivated by Dallas, but a romance with the coach’s daughter is not in his plans. A friendship is possible, though.

The author has a good feel for college life, especially for a freshman when everything is new, frightening, and exciting. Dallas and Carson are well drawn characters as are their friends, Stella and Ryan. The author does a good job of capturing the mindset of a football player and what they will do to stay on top. She shows a good example of the good way and the bad way to make first string. Dallas’ struggle for independence and for Carson is totally absorbing. I really enjoyed my trip back to college and look forward to the next Rusk novel.
