Genevieve “Gen” Drake is a vessel of light and has just lost her husband to hell. Lethe a soul collector snatched him and has trapped him in hell, and now Gen has to find a way to get him back.

Jude is Gen’s husband, and the one who is lost in hell.

When Lethe, a soul collector snatches Gen’s new husband, she has vowed she will do anything to get him back, even traverse the bowels of hell and fight every demon there. Even make a bond with another demon, Dommiel, high demon of New Orleans. She will do anything because she carries a secret that she cannot bear the thought that Jude will never know. But it is not only that, not only that she loves him and cannot bear the thought of life without it, there is a war coming and Gen knows she will be a part of it and that she is a part of the prophecy associated with it. She needs Jude to help her fight this war on the side of light. But it will be a long slow battle to get Jude back, and she will need the help of not just the demon Dommiel but the archangel Uriel, and George, the original George who slayed the dragon no less, if she is to survive the coming battle with Lethe and the demon Prince Bamal, who the prophecy says has a vessel of his own, one that Gen must battle to the death. A vessel that Gen is little equipped to fight. It is a battle that if she loses, they all lose.

Whew! What a ride! The world building is fantastic in this book. I really enjoyed the gothic, dark feel to it. Gen as a heroine is just one you just want to keep reading. She’s truly “kick ass” and “take no prisoners” and I totally loved that about her. No matter how many obstacles got put in front of her she just kept going. It did not matter that Dommiel was a demon and technically a bad guy, she was willing to forge an alliance with him anyway if it would help her get Jude back. She never pulled a punch, and just kept on going no matter how difficult things got. It made for a truly fantastic story. The only downer for me was that I had not read the previous two books so I sort of came in at the final stage of the story and as such I missed some details from things that had happened in previous books. Nonetheless, this book truly deserves five cups and I look forward to more stories from this author.
