Damaso Pires became more than the boy born an impoverished orphan and has no qualms about seducing the daring princess Marisa of Bengaria. On an exclusive vacation, he thinks he sees in her more than the façade of party girl she shares with the world—a stillness suggesting depth which tempts him to seduce her.

Marisa, buried in an unsurmountable grief, takes him to her bed and is sure they share more than earthshattering orgasms between the sheets. When Damaso leaves her side once he’s satisfied, she cloaks herself in pride and the masks she’s grown so experienced at wearing.

An unexpected pregnancy results from their night of passion and neither is willing to walk away. Damaso encourages her to stay by his side, hoping he can convince her to share their child and perhaps even his bed. Marisa, however, is used to men trying to manipulate her emotions to get what she wants and the last thing she’ll ever do is abandon her child. Can these two tempestuous characters find love to match the passion which ignites when they’re together? Or will the fire of their desires leave them both with little more than a handful of ashes?

While reading this novel, this reviewer couldn’t help but think it to be a retro-romance. Every page and word is legacy Harlequin, from the woman who is strong because the words say so, to the hero who refuses to buckle under the weight of obvious love, instead insisting the emotion overwhelming him is passion. Presented as a more modern romance, this story fell short of the mark. However if reading for that old school romance feel, it is fantastic. Highly recommend for lovers of classic HQ romances.
