All Elissande Edgerton wants to do is get her and her Aunt Rachel out from underneath her Uncle Edmund’s tormenting and controlling thumb. When an unexpected house party takes place while he is away, she comes up with a devious plan to escape her life of imprisonment for good.

Penny, Lord Vere, has everyone but those who know the truth believing him to be a complete idiot. Spewing nonsense out of his mouth, creating chaos in his wake, and leaving people with the impression that he cannot keep a secret.

When Elissande first meets Penny, she is taken in by his gorgeous façade, until he speaks. Soon she turns to his brother Freddie, hoping he can become so enamored of her that somehow he will be able to take her and her aunt out of the house before her uncle returns. Penny sees her as a manipulative woman who will go to any lengths to get what she wants, even if it means destroying a man’s life. Both have their own agendas, carrying secrets with heavy burdens and neither expects that with one simple lie it will change both of their lives irrevocably.

His at Night is both a wonderful tale and a heartbreaking story full of lies, half-truths, and deceptions. Ms. Thomas knows how to make the reader ache for the unhappiness and abuse that Elissande endures at her uncle’s hand. I was in tears as I watched the horrendous actions that Edmund’s vile temper created, leaving me sobbing at the utter despair that Elissande felt. When I was first introduced to Penny, all I could think was no one could be this idiotic and then later I breathed a huge sigh of relief as the truth was revealed to the reader. This book is a roller coaster ride full of emotions that keeps you on your toes and hoping for the best for these two characters.
