His entire adult life Alex Dovington has kept his inability to read a secret from everyone but his best friend and manager Tommy. Although his career as a jazz saxophonist has brought him money and fame, he has not been happy for a long time.

Unlike her father, Cara Williams cares about helping people. With Beacon House she is able to open a whole new world to people with illiteracy, which makes losing her business all the more heartbreaking.

Cara desperately needs the donation she will get if she can teach Alex to read in three days, but at what price? Although Alex has no idea who she is, Cara knows him and has followed his career for years. The women in his past do not hold a candle to Cara, yet Alex cannot fully trust her or himself, especially with the guilt that hangs over his head. Cara’s heart breaks every time Alex touches her, knowing that as soon as he finds out who she is, he will never want anything to do with her.

When it comes to heat and romance Cara and Alex are star pupils, but they could definitely use some tutoring in communication. Their big “secrets” are a little overblown in my opinion, especially since they were children at the time, and Cara had nothing to do with her father’s job. Adult illiteracy though is a wonderful plot concept, one which I would really like to see explored in more detail between Alex and Cara. Ms. Evans lends a lovely spice and liveliness to her characters, making this a very pleasurable read.
