Historical Romance

Velvet Campbell is the daughter of a vicar and went into service as a governess when he died. She is intelligent, kind and extremely well educated. The young woman is a virtuous as she is beautiful, but scandalous gossip in London would have it otherwise.

Lucian Pendar is dark and devilishly handsome and the father of a young daughter. He is the victim of scurrilous rumors also. His wife died after a fall from a cliff and many blame him.

Rumor and a ruined reputation send Velvet to far off Cornwall and a new position as governess to a young girl. The house is remote and the owner darkly mysterious. Lucian himself is suspected of doing away with his wife. Velvet is attracted but not willing to be his mistress, no matter how black her reputation, but more than her virtue may be at stake here.

This story has a wonderful gothic feel about it. Lucian is brooding, dark, and even has a scar and secrets in his past. Velvet is pure but maligned by people who should have protected her. The plot is intriguing and suspenseful with many mysterious twists. The secondary characters are interesting and out of the ordinary. It has been a long time since I have read a gothic romance as good as this one.
