Marchesa Alessandra Giamatti is unusual for her time. A beautiful noblewoman, she is also a respected scholar and expert in archeology and metallurgy. She is a widow with an eight-year-old daughter and a secret in her past.

Lord James Jacquehart Pierson is also known as Black Jack. He is the fifth son of the Duke of Ledyard, wickedly handsome, a war hero, noted scholar, and talented artist. He still feels a bit inferior to his brothers.

An archeological dig in Bath presents very different opportunities to a wide assortment of people. Noted scholar Alessandra Giamatti is to try out a new grid system of digging, Jack Pierson has been invited due to his impressive artistic talent, and some others have nefarious purpose in the city. Alessandra and Jack have a fierce attraction to each other that will not be denied, but a secret from her past will put them all in danger.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are a bit more colorful and continental than the usual Regency-era story, and the story is stronger for that. The Italian contingent adds quite a bit of spice to the story. I loved Jack and Alessandra’s stormy romance, the passion between the two of them set the pages on fire. The plot is interesting and full of action with vividly drawn characters and just a bit of humor. Little Isabella is a scene stealer who promises to be every bit as interesting as her mother when she grows up. The villains are colorful and delightfully evil and the author has an interesting flair for justice. Fans of Historical Romance are not going to be able to put this one down.
